In memory of Bob Everton
December 21, 2004

This past week marked the death of Bob Everton, one of the only Canadians present in General Augusto Pinochet’s terrorist soccer-stadium assembly after the U.S.-backed September 11th coup. Andrea Pinochet-Escudero, daughter of a Chilean Communist exile living in Vancouver, wrote these words in memory of our departed comrade.

Fellow Activists and Revolutionaries,

I write these words with immense consternation, and feeling of loss.  A few days ago our community lost one of its most dedicated activists and revolutionaries, Bob Everton.  From the first time I saw Bob speak at a Latin America event I was captivated by his dedication and revolutionary fervour that echoed the struggle of the Latin American Continent.  My words will never capture the loss we have endured, but I write to honour a man who has given his life to the cause.  While I am deeply saddened by Bob's unexpected departure, I find inspiration in Bob's work as an organizer, as a revolutionary, as an intellectual, and as a teacher.

I thank you Bob for enriching my world with your experience, dedication, and revolutionary non-sectarian analysis.  Our next project will not be the same without your presence, but we will continue organizing in your honor, and in the honor of the many who have lived their lives fighting for a better world.  Once again thank you Bob for your contribution to humanity.
